The spokesman for the Russian presidency, Dmitry Peskov, reported this Friday (25) that a trilateral meeting between Russia, the United States and Ukraine could take place soon.
According to him, the possibility was discussed during the last telephone conversation between presidents Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump. However, there is still no set date for the meeting.
Peskov told reporters that the discussion took place over the US proposal to organize a trilateral meeting between Russia, Ukraine and the United States, at a technical level, in the United Arab Emirates.
“This discussion did indeed take place. They discussed the possibility of such a meeting taking place soon. This occurred during the last telephone conversation between Putin and Trump. I cannot provide further details for now,” the Kremlin spokesman said.
The proposal comes amid the resumption of diplomatic contacts between Moscow and Washington and attempts to advance negotiations to end the conflict in Ukraine. Putin and Trump have held direct talks in recent months, while envoys from both governments have held contacts with Russian and Ukrainian officials.
At the UN General Assembly in New York, Trump once again defended the possibility of a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine. Zelensky also declared his willingness to participate in negotiations in a trilateral format.
Despite the resumption of diplomatic contacts, fighting continues and Moscow and Kiev remain far apart on key issues for a possible agreement. Russia says a lasting solution needs to take into account the “root causes” of the conflict and Russian security concerns. Ukraine, in turn, defends the establishment of a ceasefire and negotiations on the terms of peace.
The Kremlin had previously indicated that a meeting between Putin and Zelensky would be premature without prior technical and diplomatic preparation. In this sense, a meeting in the United Arab Emirates could function as a preparatory step for negotiations at a higher level.
