Increase was driven by “the biggest rise in gasoline prices in almost 4 years”
UK consumer inflation rose to 2.9% on the year in July, up from 2.6% in June. It is the highest rate in 4 months. In the monthly comparison, the CPI (Consumer Price Index) rose 0.3%. In July 2025, the increase had been 0.1%.
The data was released by the ONS (National Statistics Office) this Wednesday (19.Aug.2026). Here is the full text in English (PDF – 2 MB).
The CPIH (Consumer Price Index including homeowners’ housing costs), the broadest indicator of British inflation, rose 3.1% in 12 months. In June, it had registered an increase of 2.8%. In the monthly comparison, it increased 0.3% in July 2026, having remained practically unchanged in July 2025.
Housing and domestic services, led by a 14.7% rise in gas prices and a 3.6% rise in electricity, were the sectors that contributed most to the monthly increase in CPIH and annual CPI rates. The transport sector was the one that presented the largest negative contribution, which partially offset this reduction.
According to the ONS, inflation growth was driven by “biggest increase in gasoline prices in almost 4 years”.
According to the report, the annual rate increase from June 2026 to July 2026 reflected an upward effect from gas, whose prices rose 14.7% in July 2026, compared to a 7.2% drop in 2025.
The rise was the biggest in gas prices since October 2022, when UK consumers began to feel higher prices resulting from the war-related energy crisis in Ukraine. This month’s increase means gas prices are at their highest level since March 2024.
