Popular movements held projections on buildings in the city of São Paulo (SP) this Friday (26) to express solidarity with the Cuban people and denounce the impacts of the blockade and threats from the United States against the island. The initiative, organized by Alba Movimentos, the Paulista Movement of Solidarity with Cuba Associação Cultural José Martí SP and the Homeless Movement of the Center (MSTC), during the 9th of July occupation, marked the beginning of the National Day of Solidarity with Cuba and the celebrations of Fidel Castro’s centenary.
The journey will bring together activities in Brazilian cities in the coming months. According to the organizations, the mobilization reaffirms the legacy of the struggle for sovereignty, self-determination of peoples and Latin American integration, inspired by José Martí, Fidel Castro, Hugo Chávez and Ernesto Che Guevara.
The movements also denounce the economic blockade imposed on Cuba and assert a position against the threats and interference of the United States government in Latin America. The campaign, carried out under the slogan of defending the sovereignty of the people, also criticizes the policies of President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio towards the region and reinforces the slogan “Hands off Latin America.”
The program for the National Day of Solidarity with Cuba includes a motorcade, bicycle ride and “All and All for Cuba” flag march in São Paulo, this Saturday (27), anti-imperialist acts in several cities across the country on July 3 and 4, solidarity actions with Nicolás Maduro and Cília Flores over six months, Cuban Rebellion festivals on July 26 and activities on August 13 to mark Fidel Castro’s 100th birthday.
During the mobilization, solidarity actions with the Venezuelan people, activities in defense of Venezuela’s sovereignty and the production of murals in honor of Fidel Castro’s centenary in different states will also be promoted. The organizations claim that the day reaffirms the commitment of popular movements to internationalist solidarity, the integration of Latin America and the defense of the sovereignty and self-determination of peoples.
