Aircraft with Ebrahim Raisi flew near the border with Azerbaijan; there is no information about injuries or damage

A helicopter carrying the president of Iran, Ebrahim Raisi, had to make a forced landing this Sunday (May 19, 2024) due to bad weather conditions, such as heavy rain and winds. There is still no information about the Iranian leader’s health status.

According to Irna (the country’s state-to-state news agency), the aircraft was passing through the Iranian province of East Azerbaijan. The incident was near Jolfa, a town on the border with Azerbaijan.

In addition to the Iranian president, Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, governor of East Azarbaijan province Malek Rahmati, Tabriz Friday prayer leader Hojjatoleslam Al Hashem and several others were also on the helicopter.

Through X (formerly Twitter), the Iranian news agency Tasnim reported that there were 3 other helicopters in the presidential convoy. Two of them were with other ministers and officials and reached their destination safely.
