The defeated candidate for the presidency of Colombia, Iván Cepeda, called on the population to peaceful civil disobedience in the country, if lawyer Abelardo de la Espriella assumes the presidency of the Republic without clarifying a series of controversies that compromise national sovereignty.

The opposition leader outlined four fundamental demands to guarantee the legality and legitimacy of Colombia’s future government: first, Espriella must publicly renounce his US nationality and explicitly clarify whether or not he is a collaborator or member of US security agencies.

Second, Cepeda urged the president-elect to commit to full respect for Colombia’s national security and judicial sovereignty, reiterating that the integrity of Colombian institutions cannot be compromised by external loyalties.

Thirdly, that any persecution against the current president, Gustavo Petro, be ended and that any proposal to extradite him be abandoned, guaranteeing political stability and respect for the constitutional order.

Fourthly, in the same vein, the persecution of political opponents must also be stopped, guaranteeing a democratic, pluralistic and fair environment. Espriella has encouraged the United States Department of Justice to act against opponents in the country.

The senator invited the millions of voters who placed their trust in him to press for compliance with the demands in defense of Colombia’s sovereignty and to peacefully disregard any order, provision or mandate from anyone who does not fulfill their role as guardian and guarantor of the Political Constitution of Colombia.
