Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi stated on Wednesday (27) that Latin American countries must have the autonomy to choose their own paths and partners, without interference from third parties. The declaration, recorded in official statements from the Chinese Foreign Ministry, comes against a backdrop of growing pressure from the United States to maintain and expand its influence in the region, often exercised through unilateral measures and restrictions on foreign investment.

During the annual press conference in Beijing, held on March 8, 2026, Wang Yi emphasized that Latin America’s resources belong to the people themselves. The chancellor maintained that cooperation between China and Latin American nations is guided by mutual support between countries in the Global South, ensuring that Beijing does not carry out geopolitical calculations, does not intervene in internal affairs and does not require nations to choose sides in international disputes.

The Chinese stance reiterates the principle of non-interference, a pillar of the country’s diplomacy towards the region. According to the chancellor, the Sino-Latin American partnership is not directed against third parties and must, therefore, be free from external interference that seeks to limit the sovereignty of countries in the region. This guideline is also contained in the 3rd Document on China’s Policy towards Latin America and the Caribbean, published in December 2025, which formalizes Beijing’s commitment to mutual benefit and cooperation in strategic sectors such as infrastructure and finance.

Since the first document on the topic, in 2016, China has presented Latin America as a long-term strategic partner, defending relations based on equality and shared development. This strategy is part of a broader project to strengthen the Global South and build an international order considered more fair, opposing what Beijing classifies as hegemonism and unilateralism.
