China Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Friday that Beijing will continue to take retaliatory measures against the “arbitrary tariffs” imposed by the United States. During a press conference at the country’s annual parliamentary session, Wang harshly criticized Donald Trump’s administration, accusing her of encouraging the “jungle law” by adopting a unilateralist stance in the international arena.
“If all countries emphasize ‘my country in the first place’ and are obsessed with a position of strength, the ‘jungle law’ will reign in the world again, with smaller and weaker countries suffering first impact and severely impaired international rules and orders,” according to Wang.
An important country must honor their international obligations and fulfill their due responsibilities, said Wang. The story will prove that the true winner is the one who has in mind the interests of all.
According to Wang, China tried to cooperate with the US to combat fentanyl trafficking, but has been responded to punitive tariffs. “No country should fantasize that can repress China and maintain a good relationship with China at the same time,” said the Chinese chancellor. For him, this approach of “two faces” compromises the stability of bilateral relations and undermines mutual trust.
Tariffs and retaliation measures
This week, Washington announced new rates against Chinese products, claiming concerns about Fentanil’s smuggling. In response, Beijing classified measures as unjustified and announced additional rates on US agricultural products. From Monday (10), items such as soy, beef, seafood and dairy products will be subject to an additional 10%tax, while chicken, wheat and corn will face rates of up to 15%.
The tariff climb marks another chapter of the commercial dispute between the two largest economies in the world, which has intensified since Trump’s return to the White House in January. The US increased fixed taxes on all Chinese imports to 20%, while China responded with 15% rates on American products and commercial restrictions.
He said the United States should rethink what they have gained from tariff and commercial wars in those years – if their commercial deficit has increased or decreased, whether their manufacture has become more or less competitive, if your inflation has risen or descended and if your people’s life has improved or worsened.
“Small courtyards with high fences” cannot suppress the spirit of innovation, and the decoupling and interruption of supply chains will only lead to self -assurance, the minister said. Wang said science and technology should not be used to erect an iron curtain, but they should be the wealth that benefits everyone and is shared by all.
“Where there is blockade, there is advancement; Where there is repression, there is innovation, ”Wang answered a question about United States technological repression against China. Noting that unjustified external repression of China, whether in spatial science or chip manufacturing, never stopped, Wang said that the path of China to become a scientific and technological power is expanding.
China and multilateralism
During the conference, Wang Yi reinforced China’s position as a defender of multilateralism and criticized US isolationist policy. “If each country focuses only on its national priorities and believing only in strength and status, the world will return to the Stone Age,” warned Wang, noting that small and vulnerable countries would be the most damaged.
The chancellor also stressed the importance of global south in the world economy and defended greater influence from emerging countries on global governance. He praised the role of the BRICS and pointed out that China leads more than 1,000 development projects in Africa and Latin America.
“There will be no global modernization without African modernization, and the stability and development of Africa are vital to the future of humanity,” said Wang. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the China-Africa Cooperation Forum. Over the past 25 years, China has helped Africa build or modernize about 100,000 kilometers of roads and over 10,000 kilometers of railways, Wang said, adding that in the last three years only, Chinese companies have created more than 1.1 million new jobs in Africa.
To promote the common development of humanity, China has taken practical measures to implement the Global Governance initiative presented by President XI Jinping and launched the AI for good and all training plan, emphasized Wang.
China has also proposed the International Science Cooperation Initiative in Brazil, South Africa and the African Union, summoning everyone to give priority to the scientific and technological training of the global southern so that no country is left behind, Wang added.
China is “ready to share the fruits of its innovation with more countries and jointly explore the mysteries of the stars and the oceans,” said Wang.
China’s position on international conflicts
About the war in Ukraine, Wang Yi reaffirmed the need for negotiations for a peaceful solution. According to him, China wants to promote a “fair, lasting and binding peace agreement” and will continue to act as a mediator. At the same time, it is necessary to recognize that the roots of this crisis are complex, because “three feet of ice do not form in one day”, and its dissolution will not be immediate either. However, the conflict cannot have winners, just as peace will have no losers.
At the beginning of the conflict, President XI Jinping presented the important proposal of the “four duties”, which outlined the direction of Chinese efforts. Based on this, China published a document about its position in the Ukraine crisis, highlighted special envoying for traveling diplomacy and, together with Brazil and other global southern countries, launched the UN the “Friends of Peace” initiative.
Finally, Wang Yi stated that after more than three years of conflict, it is evident that this tragedy could have been avoided. All parties should take lessons from the crisis: security is mutual and egalitarian. One country’s safety cannot be built at the expense of the insecurity of another. It is necessary to defend and implement a new concept of common, comprehensive, cooperative and sustainable security, to achieve lasting peace in Eurasia and around the world, he concluded.
The minister also criticized Trump’s plan for Gaza, which includes taking control of the enclave and moving Palestinians to neighboring countries. For Wang, any forced change in territory status would only aggravate tensions. He reiterated China’s support to the peace plan presented by Egypt and other Arab nations, emphasizing that the solution of two states is the only viable alternative to the region.
Taiwan: China Red Line
Asked about Taiwan, Wang Yi was emphatic in claiming that the island “was never a country and never will be in the future.” He warned that any movement towards Taiwan’s independence would be seen as a “threat to regional stability” and that those who support this idea “will be playing with fire.”
The victory of the Chinese people’s resistance war against Japanese aggression put Taiwan back under China’s sovereign jurisdiction in 1945, he added. This year, marks the 80th anniversary of Taiwan’s recovery. China will celebrate this 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese people’s resistance war against Japanese aggression and anti -fascist World War, and will hold a series of major events, including the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit this year, according to Wang.
Both Cairo’s statement and Potsdam proclamation, issued by the main victorious nations of World War II, explicitly stated that Taiwan is a territory that Japan stole from the Chinese and should be returned to China. Japan also accepted the terms of the proclamation of Potsdam and announced its unconditional surrender, said Wang.
Resolution 2758, adopted in 1971 by the UN General Assembly, resolved the issue of representing the whole China, including Taiwan, in the UN, and excluded any possibility of creating “two Chinas” or “one China, a Taiwan,” emphasized Wang.
“All of this confirmed China’s sovereignty about Taiwan and formed an important part of the postwar international order,” Wang noted.
Clarifying the “Taiwan Independence” is dividing the country, supporting “Taiwan’s independence” is to interfere with China’s internal affairs and be conniving with Taiwan’s “Independence” is to undermine the stability of Taiwan’s Strait, he said.
Wang stressed that respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries should mean support for China’s complete reunification and a commitment to one China’s principle must mean opposition to any form of “Taiwan’s independence”.
“Seeking” Taiwan’s independence “is condemned to failure and using Taiwan to contain China will be no more than a futile attempt,” said Wang. “China will reunite, and this is unstoppable.”
Wang Yi’s press conference reinforced China’s position as a global actor seeking to counteract the unilateral measures of Washington. Beijing signals that he is willing to dialogue, but will not accept unanswered external pressures. With the growing geopolitical fragmentation, the dispute between China and the US promises to remain one of the main topics of international relations in 2025.
