The majority of the North American population attributes the deterioration of the United States economy to Donald Trump’s policies, according to an AtlasIntel survey released this Tuesday (12).

The survey shows that 62.8% of those interviewed believe that the measures adopted by the president have worsened the country’s economic situation, while disapproval of the Republican has reached the highest level since his inauguration.

The survey, carried out between May 4th and 7th with 2,069 North American adults, shows that only 30.6% believe that Trump’s policies improved the economy. Another 6% said they did not notice any relevant effects.

The margin of error is two percentage points, plus or minus, with a 95% confidence level.

The numbers reinforce the growing weariness of the White House precisely in the area that Trump historically treated as his main political showcase: the economy.

The scenario occurs amid increasing criticism of the cost of living, persistent inflation and uncertainty caused by the tariff policy adopted by the Republican government.

The negative perception also appears when interviewees evaluate the impacts of government measures on their own financial lives.

According to the survey, 55.5% said their personal economic situation had worsened under Trump’s policies. Only 24% said they noticed an improvement, while 19.8% said they did not notice significant changes.

Inflation and cost of living lead concerns in the US

When asked about the main problems currently facing the United States, respondents pointed to inflation and cost of living as the biggest concern, with 46.8% of responses. Next come “economy and job market”, with 41.1%, and “safeguarding democracy”, cited by 38.3%.

Topics often explored by Trump in his political rhetoric, such as immigration, appear behind economic issues. According to AtlasIntel, 33.6% cited immigration as the main national concern, while 29.3% cited health services.

The negative evaluation of the president’s performance spreads across practically all areas of government. The majority of those interviewed classified Trump’s performance on issues such as trade tariffs, economy, education, health, immigration and defense as “bad” or “terrible”.

There was also strong rejection in the areas of foreign policy. According to the survey, the conduct of US relations with NATO, the war in Ukraine, the Middle East, Cuba and Venezuela receives predominantly negative evaluation.

Disapproval reaches highest level since inauguration

The survey also shows that 59.8% of Americans disapprove of Trump’s overall performance as president, compared to around 39% who approve of his administration. This is the highest rejection rate recorded by AtlasIntel since the beginning of the Republican’s current term.

When asked directly about the presidential performance, six in ten respondents classified the government as “bad” or “terrible”. Only 37.2% considered Trump’s performance “good” or “excellent”, while 2.7% rated it as “average”.

Rejection rates are even higher among certain social groups. According to the survey, 87.6% of young people between 18 and 29 years old disapprove of Trump. Among people with a family income of less than US$50,000 per year, rejection reaches 65.2%.

Among ethnic groups, the greatest disapproval appears among black Americans, with 69.9%. The survey also shows higher rejection among men (62.8%) than among women (57.1%).
