China is expected to have around 2.13 billion trips over the seven-day National Day holiday starting October 1, the 77th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.
The data from the Chinese Ministry of Transport counts each trip between different regions and adds trips on highways (which are estimated), train, plane and boat tickets. In this way, it does not refer to the number of people traveling, but to displacements.
On these dates, China has two holidays that are close together and sometimes come together: the Mid-Autumn festival (this year, from September 25th to 27th) and National Day, which will be from October 1st to 7th.
The peak will be the first day, when 340 million trips are expected. The Ministry of Transport presented the data at a central government press conference on Thursday (24), before the first holiday.
The ministry projected a growth of more than 20% in demand for airline tickets, high-speed trains and car rentals.
The National Railway Administration estimated 284 million passengers for the 16-day period between September 23 and October 8. The daily peak is expected to exceed 24.4 million passengers, a number that, according to spokesperson and deputy director of administration, Wang Qiming, would be a record for National Day. On average, 13 thousand passenger trains will run per day.
The Civil Aviation Administration of China estimated 31.19 million passengers in the period from September 25 to October 7, which represents an increase of 3.6% compared to the same period last year. The daily maximum is expected to exceed 2.6 million passengers and 19,800 flights, according to the deputy director of administration, Ma Bing. International flight bookings grew by 22.5%. Flights to Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam and Laos grew by 20%, and to the United Kingdom, Germany and Spain, by 15%.
At the press conference, Vice Minister of Transport, Li Yang, stated that the number of electric car charging stations “is still insufficient to meet demand”. Across the country, there are 89,000 charging stations for electric cars. On National Day alone, 17.8 million electric, hybrid or hydrogen-powered cars are expected to circulate across the country.
Highways will be exempt from tolls for vehicles with up to seven seats between October 1st and 7th.
