Whether due to political and economic pressure or support for parties and candidates, the United States is already interfering in Brazilian elections. This is the assessment of historian Luiz Eduardo Fernandes, professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) and author of the book “The Lava Jato International: imperialism, new right and the fight against corruption as a farce”.

To the Brazil in facthe said that “the elections have already been receiving some level of intervention more or less since last year with two main fronts, which is the debate on violence, with the category ‘narcoterrorism’, and the debate on corruption”.

Both themes are present in the “security” proposals of the Shield of the Americas plan, a Donald Trump project that has already had the support of 14 Latin American countries.

“Our extreme right, anti-national and surrendering, has deep relationships with organized crime, which today — due to the deindustrialization of our economies — has great economic and political weight. Therefore, this idea of the Shield of the Americas combating organized crime is the opposite of that: it will strengthen sectors linked to it,” he said.

The researcher also recalled the revelation from the British newspaper The Guardianwhich reported on a US financing line for groups that aimed to attack the Federal Supreme Court (STF) and also the US decision to close diplomatic offices.

“Without a doubt, closing the consulates is part of a psychological war to generate instability and chaos, which is in the US interest to have Brazil increasingly divided and disintegrated. Easier to make a barrage or a rupture, generating chaos is more efficient in favor of US interests”, he stated.

Lula is an obstacle for Trump

The researcher also stated that Trump’s project sees Latin America “as a reserve of power that the USA must have to face Russia and China”

“The structuring of this project comes from a neocolonial perspective and allies itself with the extreme right in the region. Brazil and Lula’s leadership are the great obstacle to this project, because Lula defends multilateralism, Mercosur, integration, etc. Today, Lula is the great obstacle to Trumpism in the region”, he said.

Fernandes, however, remembers that the political campaign continues despite the interference. “The moment is not one of despair. Imperialism is just one of the political forces that are acting in the elections. The popular forces and Lula himself have the strength to resist this process”, he assessed.
