The Iranian government presented a counterproposal to end the war in the Middle East, classified by Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei as “legitimate and generous”. The document, sent via Pakistani mediators, was rejected by the President of the United States, Donald Trump, who classified the terms as “totally unacceptable” in a post on the Truth Social network this Sunday (10).
The diplomatic impasse caused oil prices to rise by 3% this Monday (11), a reflection of instability in the Strait of Hormuz, through which 20% of the global flow of the commodity circulates.
The Iranian proposal demands an immediate end to hostilities, the lifting of the naval blockade and piracy in the Persian Gulf, as well as the release of financial assets frozen by Washington. Baghaei argued that the plan is a responsible response to US “unreasonable demands” and prioritizes regional stability and sovereignty in Lebanon.
In contrast, the original US memorandum conditioned the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz on negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program and a 20-year moratorium on uranium enrichment. Trump’s reaction was emphatic when he stated that Iran “has been playing with the world for 47 years” and that the response sent by Tehran will not be accepted.
The scenario is worsened by Benjamin Netanyahu’s position, which conditions any agreement on Iranian nuclear dismantlement. While the diplomatic route stalls, sporadic clashes persist in Lebanon and the Persian Gulf, even under the partial ceasefire in force since April.
