Ingredients

  • 2 large apples, peeled, peeled and cut into small pieces

  • 2 tablespoons of lemon juice

  • 2 cups of wheat flour

  • 1 teaspoon of baking soda

  • 1 teaspoon of baking powder

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

  • 1 teaspoon of cinnamon powder

  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)

  • 1/2 cup softened butter (1 stick)

  • 1 cup of sugar

  • 2 eggs

  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla essence

  • 1/2 cup of milk

  • 1/2 cup walnuts or chestnuts (optional)

Directions

  • Preheat the oven to 180°C. 
    Grease a cake pan with butter and sprinkle with flour, or line with baking paper.
  • In a small bowl, mix the apple pieces with the lemon juice and set aside.
  • In another medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg (if using). 
    Reserve.
  • In a large bowl, beat the butter and sugar until light and creamy. 
    This can be done with an electric mixer or manually with a whisk.
  • Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. 
    Mix in the vanilla essence.
  • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter and sugar mixture, alternating with the milk. 
    Start and end with the dry ingredients. 
    Stir until the dough is well combined.
  • Add the chopped apples (and walnuts, if using) to the batter and stir gently to distribute them evenly.
  • Pour the batter into the prepared pan and level it.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for approximately 40-45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  • Remove the cake from the oven and let it cool in the pan for a few minutes before unmolding. 
    Then let it cool completely on a wire rack before slicing and serving.
