Brazil defends recognition of Palestine at the UN

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Brazil, Mauro Vieira, confirmed his participation in the open discussion of the United Nations Security Council (UN), scheduled for next Thursday (18), which will include the presence of countries that are not members of the collegiate. His priority will be to defend the recognition of Palestine as a full member of the UN.

Vieira has been actively engaged in coordination with diplomats from different countries to respond to the Palestinian Authority’s request, especially in the midst of the current conflict. Last weekend, the Brazilian chancellor discussed the topic with the chancellors of Belgium, Spain, Norway and Portugal.

The United Nations Security Council will vote this Thursday on Palestine’s candidacy to become a full UN member state. In recent weeks, Mauro Vieira and ambassadors from several countries have intensified contacts to strengthen the campaign in support of the Palestinian cause.

The Brazilian government considers this recognition crucial to reaching a lasting peace agreement in the region, including the definition of clear borders, which is essential to prevent future Israeli incursions into Palestinian territory.

Palestine submitted a letter in April requesting a new analysis of its application for full UN membership. On April 8, the Security Council forwarded the request to its Committee for the Admission of New Members.

Before the meeting at the UN, Minister Mauro Vieira will review Brazil’s position on Iran’s retaliation against Israel during President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s visit to Colombia.

The note released by Itamaraty after Iran’s attack on Israel, on Saturday (12), was criticized by Jewish entities for not directly condemning Iran. The Brazilian government expressed concern about the situation and called for restraint to avoid an escalation, without mentioning the Iran directly.

Asked about the tone of the note, the Brazilian chancellor explained that the objective was to avoid a statement that could worsen the situation.

The Brazilian government defends the priority of avoiding the escalation of the conflict in the Middle East, maintaining the focus on protecting civilians in the Gaza Strip.
