The lack of progress is a consequence of the lack of consensus among the organization’s member countries, which have veto power on suggested resolutions: the United States, United Kingdom, France, Russia and China.
The meeting did not foresee a vote on a resolution, but the Council was expected to issue at least an official position on the attack of 300 drones and missiles directed from Iran to Israeli territory.
However, the session, marked by exchanges of accusations, ended without a common statement between the countries.
While Israel demanded condemnation, sanctions and classification of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (Iran’s Army) as a “terrorist organization”, it also compared the government of Iran’s supreme leader Ali Khamenei to that of Adolf Hitler.
In turn, Iran’s ambassador to the UN, Amir Iravani, called Israel a “spoiled child”, once again arguing that its action was in response to the attack that Tel Aviv carried out against the Iranian Embassy in Syria on April 1.
“Objectives achieved” and denial of conflict escalation
According to the Israeli army, “99% of Iran’s attacks” directed at the country last Saturday night (13/04) were intercepted by the defense system, known as the Iron Dome, and by bases of strategic allies in the region, such as the United States, Jordan and the United Kingdom.
Aimed at southern Israel, more than a thousand kilometers from Iran, the projectiles took hours to approach Israeli territory, until 5:45 am on Sunday (11:45 pm in Tel Aviv). According to the Armed Forces, practically all of them were interrupted, classifying the results of the action as “minimal damage”.
According to local press, at least 31 people, including a 10-year-old boy and a 7-year-old girl, were seriously injured by shrapnel in the night attack. An air force base in southern Israel, in Nevatim, was lightly hit, but operates normally.
In turn, the head of the Iranian Armed Forces, Mohammad Bagheri, declared this Sunday morning (14/04) that the drone attack against Israel “achieved all its objectives” and that Tehran has “no intention” of continuing with the offensive, countering a possible escalation of the conflict in the Gaza Strip.
The success of the operation was reiterated by the head of the Iranian armed forces, Hossein Salami. The commander also classified the action as “successful and proportional to the harmful Israeli actions, even if it could have been more extensive”, he added.
However, the commander warned Tel Aviv not to counterattack: “if Israel attacks Iran’s interests, assets, personalities or citizens in the future, we will attack the Zionist regime again from Iranian territory.”
The Iranian president, Ebrahim Raïssi, declared, through social media, that the action of “attacking some military bases of the occupying regime [de Israel]” was “successful” and corresponded to “Iran’s self-defense”.
“I warn that any new adventure against the interests of the Iranian nation will meet with a heavier and more regrettable response,” added the president.
The attacks by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (as the Iranian Armed Forces are known, whose acronym is IRGC), confirmed by the Iranian state agency IRNAby Israeli authorities and the United States, involved the firing of 300 military drones, including 100 ballistic and cruise missiles.
