The governments of Venezuela and the United States announced this Friday (28) an energy agreement that was considered “historic” by both countries.

Without giving details, President Donald Trump and interim president Delcy Rodríguez reported that the agreement should involve reserves of more than 65 billion barrels of oil.

In a note, Rodríguez also stated that the pact “encompasses the development of 17 strategic fields, […] an investment of more than 100 billion dollars and more than 209 billion dollars in taxes for the State”.

“[O acordo] will have a significant impact on the rebirth of our nation”, said the Venezuelan president.

Trump said that the agreement had the participation of “private sectors” and that it should place the aforementioned reserves “under US majority control”.

“This historic transaction more than doubles American oil reserves, significantly increases our supply and will substantially lower gasoline prices for Americans in the future,” he said.

It was not announced, however, which US companies would take part in the exploration, nor under which regime the agreements could operate.

For Venezuelan analyst Miguel Jaimes, an element that may explain the agreement is Trump’s attempt to seek stability for the operations of private oil companies.

“Trump is ensuring legal and political security for transnational companies,” he states. “The problem now is something that I have been warning about for years, which is: the sanctions bureaucracy would drown the US.”

For Jaimes, the US needs Venezuelan production to regulate its market. Which would explain the attempts at agreement.

“Yesterday they announced an increase of another 30 thousand barrels. Now we are at 1,230,000. And production has been maintained at this high level for 240 days. We surpassed the one million mark and now we are at 1,230,000. Well, they are forced to remain at that level. And, in many circles, it is widely recognized that the solution is, in fact, Venezuela”, he states.
