A 5.0 magnitude earthquake hit Tibet this Thursday (27), one day after the floods that hit parts of China and Nepal and killed hundreds of people. The epicenter of the earthquake, however, is in a region far from the area hit by the avalanche. The intensity is considered moderate, that is, it is felt but rarely causes damage.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the tremor was 10 kilometers deep, which is considered shallow. So far, authorities consider that there is no relationship between the phenomena of recent days. Regarding this Thursday’s earthquake (27), there is still no record of victims.
The tragedy in Nepal and China occurred after the collapse of a glacier, which ended up releasing rocks, mud and debris into the river systems of mountainous regions. In Nepal, flooding affected the Trishuli river valley in Nuwakot district, north of Kathmandu, as well as the Bhote Koshi river valley. In China, the avalanche affected the port of Gyirong.
So far, authorities have confirmed that 392 have died. Meanwhile, there are around 1,500 missing. Rescue teams continue to search for victims in devastated areas.
In recent hours, China has been increasing the number of troops deployed in the border region. According to information from the newspaper Global Timesthe first group of 141 rescuers arrived at the Gyirong post on Thursday morning (27), while rescuers used a Mi-171 helicopter.
Also according to the publication, another 300 people from the Lhasa and Chengdu engineering rescue bases were moved to the location. Medical and rescue equipment is being used to help victims.
