The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed this Thursday (27) that Beijing and Washington continue to talk about preparations for a meeting between the heads of state of the two countries in 2026 in the United States. “The Chinese and US sides remain in communication about arrangements for interactions between the two heads of state later this year,” spokesman Lin Jian said at a briefing.
In May, after Trump’s visit to Beijing, the White House had anticipated that Trump would receive Xi in Washington in the autumn. The meeting could take place on September 24 in Washington, according to Bloomberg. It would be Chinese President Xi Jinping’s first visit to the United States since Donald Trump returned to the White House. The information has not yet been officially confirmed by either government.
The scheduled meeting takes place amid negotiations on the extension of the trade truce between the two countries, which expires on November 10. Citing anonymous sources, the Bloomberg reported that Washington is considering imposing an additional tariff of 7.5% on Chinese products, citing “excess production capacity”.
The last meeting between Xi and Trump took place on May 14 in Beijing, when Trump visited China for the first time in nine years. At the time, Xi stated that “when the two sides cooperate, they both win; when they confront each other, they both lose”, and warned that Taiwan, if not handled carefully, could put relations between the two countries in “great danger”. The two leaders agreed to build a “Sino-US relationship of constructive strategic stability”, according to an official statement from the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Xi’s last visit to the United States was on November 15, 2023, during Joe Biden’s administration. The two leaders met with their respective delegations for around four hours at the Filoli mansion, in northern California, during the Apec summit.
