Minister stated that meeting with North American trade representative marks resumption of tariff negotiations
The Minister of Development, Industry and Commerce, Márcio Elias Rosa, stated this Thursday (27.Aug.2026) that he is “optimistic” with the resumption of talks with the USA about the tariffs applied against Brazil. The meeting with the North American trade representative, Jamieson Greer, is scheduled for Monday (31.Aug.2026).
The resumption was articulated by the US government after President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) spoke by telephone with US President Donald Trump (Republican Party), on August 20. At the time, the PT member classified the tariffs as “unfounded.”
“It’s the meeting to resume conversations, negotiations. It’s not the decision-making meeting, we’re going to start our dialogue again based on the phone call that President Lula made to President Trump”stated the minister. “A pessimistic negotiator loses the battle at the start. I am an optimist.”
The Brazilian government expects to discuss the possibility of removing products from surcharges. Elias Rosa started to lead negotiations for Brazil, while Greer is mainly responsible for North American trade policy.
Tariffs imposed by the US in July raised taxes on certain Brazilian products to up to 37.5%. The index corresponds to the combination of a 25% surcharge, applied on July 15, with another of 12.5%, announced on July 23 following a North American investigation into products related to forced labor.
