2nd preview result maintains previous estimate and slows down compared to the 2.1% increase recorded in the 1st quarter of the year
The GDP (Gross Domestic Product) of the United States grew at an annualized rate of 1.5% in the 2nd quarter of 2026, according to the 2nd estimate released this Wednesday (26.Aug.2026) by the BEA (Bureau of Economic Analysis), the country’s official economic statistics body.
The result maintained the preliminary estimate previously released. The expansion, however, slowed down in relation to the annualized growth of 2.1% recorded in the 1st quarter. Here is the full text (PDF – 2 MB, in English).
The advancement of economic activity in the period mainly demonstrated the increase in consumer spending, exports and investments. These movements were partially offset by falling government spending.
Imports also weighed on the result. As they are recorded with a negative sign in the GDP calculation, the increase in purchases of products and services from abroad reduces the net contribution of the external sector to the indicator.
Current corporate profits increased by US$400.9 billion in the 2nd quarter, after increasing US$74.4 billion in the first 3 months of the year.
INFLATION
The PCE (personal consumption expenditure price index), the main measure of inflation monitored by the Fed (Federal Reserve, the US central bank), rose at an annualized rate of 5.3% in the 2nd quarter. The result was revised upwards by 0.2 percentage points compared to the previous estimate of 5.1%.
The core PCE, which excludes food and energy prices, increased 3.6%, also 0.2 percentage points above the preliminary estimate of 3.4%.
The price index for gross domestic purchases rose 5.8%, a revision of 0.1 percentage point in relation to the first estimate.
GROSS INTERNAL INCOME
Real Gross Domestic Income (GDI) grew 2.2% in the 2nd quarter, after increasing 1.2% in the 1st quarter.
The average between real GDP and real GDI growth was 1.8% in the period. The indicator is used to offer a complementary measure of economic activity.
The 3rd and final GDP estimate for the 2nd quarter is scheduled for September 30, 2026.
