Bloc called for a transparent and inclusive process, release of political prisoners and dialogue between government and opposition
In a statement released this Friday (July 24, 2026), the European Union demanded that Nicaragua hold elections according to the original calendar and guarantee that the process is carried out in a manner “transparent, inclusive and trustworthy”in accordance with international standards. On Sunday (Jul 19), the president of Nicaragua, Daniel Ortega (Sandinista National Liberation Front, left), announced that the country will no longer hold elections.
The EU expressed its condemnation of the systematic repression carried out by the Nicaraguan authorities. He also called for the release of political prisoners in the country.
“We call on the authorities to hold elections and ensure that they take place as initially planned and are carried out in a transparent, inclusive and credible manner, in line with international standards”stated the block.
The measure further consolidates the control that Ortega and his wife, Rosario Murilloexercise over the Nicaraguan government. Now, Congress is moving forward institutionally to transform the decision into legal and constitutional reforms.
The president of the Nicaraguan National Assembly, Gustavo Porras, said that the House is preparing to prevent possible foreign intervention in the country. The deputy stated that he is preparing a bill in this regard.
By blocking the opposition’s electoral path, the leader guarantees the continuity of power that he has held uninterruptedly since 2007, in addition to a previous term in the 1980s.
The European bloc stated that it is closely monitoring the evolution of the political situation in the country and classified it as “grave” a “deterioration of fundamental rights” in Nicaragua.
