Trump says he had a good conversation with Burnham and plans a meeting

The President of the United States, Donald Trump (Republican Party), said on Monday (20.Jul.2026) that he spoke with the new British Prime Minister, Andy Burnham (Labour Party), shortly after he took office. The North American stated that the dialogue was “very good” and that plans a bilateral meeting soon to discuss topics of mutual interest.

During the call, they talked about North Sea oil, bilateral trade, the military alliance between the countries and efforts to clear the Strait of Hormuz. The American president said he will support the prime minister, who took office after the departure of Keir Starmer (Labor Party) – with whom the republican had a tense relationship.

“We will meet in the near future to discuss topics of mutual interest. The Prime Minister has a big task ahead of him, but he will get the job done and, of course, the US will be there to help!” Trump said on Truth Social.

According to a statement from Downing Street, Burnham reaffirmed Britain’s commitment to the safe reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

“The president [Trump] then gave an update on the situation in the Middle East, and the Prime Minister [Burnham] outlined the UK’s commitment to securing the movement of transport across the Strait of Hormuz to support global supply chains and reduce costs for businesses and families across the country”stated the note.
