The spokesman for the Russian presidency, Dmitry Peskov, declared, this Wednesday (24), that the BRICS cannot mediate negotiations between Russia and Ukraine because it does not represent a formal organization, but highlighted that Moscow values the member countries for their willingness to facilitate the resolution of the conflict.

Peskov’s statement came during the International Forum “Primakov Readings”, held in Moscow. When speaking to the press after mediating the opening session of the event, the Kremlin spokesman responded to a question from Brazil in fact on the prospects for the BRICS countries to play a mediating role in negotiations between Moscow and Kiev.

Peskov explained that the impossibility of Brics playing this role as a group is due to the fact that the bloc does not formally represent an organization.

“BRICS cannot play the role of mediator in negotiations between Russia and Ukraine because it is not an organization, as my colleagues just stated at the beginning of the discussion. BRICS has no attributes, nor institutions associated with an organization: no statute, no headquarters, no secretariat, nothing,” he told BdF.

At the same time, the spokesman for the Russian presidency highlighted that the BRICS includes countries whose influence in international affairs is difficult to overestimate.

“The BRICS includes countries whose influence in international affairs is difficult to overestimate, and they have all declared their willingness to contribute to a solution regarding Ukraine, and we are grateful to these countries for this,” the Kremlin spokesman added.
