April 25th is one of the most important dates in Portugal. On the day, which is a national holiday, the Carnation Revolution is celebrated, a movement that ended the dictatorial period in the country. This year, when the 49th anniversary of the revolution will be celebrated, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will speak at the Assembly of the Republic of Portugal, being the first foreign head of state to do so in parliament on that date.
The announcement of Lula’s participation took place on the 23rd, when the Portuguese Minister of Foreign Affairs, João Cravinho, was received by the president at the Itamaraty Palace, in Brasília.
Cravinho’s trip was also to conduct the details of the trip that includes the Brazil-Portugal Summit meeting, between April 22nd and 25th, in Lisbon. The event, which has not been held since 2016, serves to expand bilateral cooperation between countries in various sectors.
On the trip, Lula will also hand over the Camões Literature Prize to Chico Buarque. The award was granted in 2019, but former president Jair Bolsonaro refused to endorse the award, which depends on the consent of the presidents of Brazil and Portugal.
