Vietnam will soon become BRICS’s partner, as its government has recently signaled. The official announcement may be made by Prime Minister PHạM Minh Chinh, during a meeting of bloc leaders in Rio de Janeiro in July. The presidency of the BRICS, this year, it is up to the Brazilian Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

In addition to Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (countries that gave rise to the term BRICS), the block has as full members Egypt, United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia, Indonesia and Iran. Already among the partners, category created in 2024, are Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakh, Cuba, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda and Uzbekistan.

A reinforcement that Vietnam became a partner of the bloc occurred in March this year, during Lula’s visit to the country. At the time, Lula invited him to assume this position in relation to the BRICS.

According to a joint statement of the two governments issued in Lula’s passage throughout the country, Vietnam “praised the priorities of the Brazilian Presidency of BRICS in 2025: Health; Trade, Investment and Finance; Climate Change; Artificial Intelligence Governance; Reform of the Public Peace and Security System; and BRICS Institutional Development.”

The same trip resulted, among other referrals, in an agreement on the action plan for the period 2025 to 2030, in order to implement strategic partnership between the two countries, which is a type of superior diplomatic relationship.

The bilateral relationship was raised to the strategic partnership category in November 2024, during Lula meeting with the country’s prime minister Pham Minh Chinh, in Rio de Janeiro, when there was a G20 meeting. Last year, the 35 years of diplomatic relations between the two nations were celebrated.

At the time, Lula stressed that “with the flow of bilateral trade that is already approaching $ 8 billion, Brazil exports more to Vietnam than it sells to Portugal, the United Kingdom and France. Therefore, my government is interested in recognizing Vietnam as a market economy. These and other measures will allow us to expand trade and investment flows between our countries”.
