Players displayed a message about disputed territory with the United Kingdom after the victory over England

Argentina’s football team could face disciplinary sanctions from FIFA after players displayed a banner with the phrase “The Malvinas are Argentines” (“As Malvinas são argentinas”) during the celebration of the victory over England in the World Cup semi-final.

The Argentines beat the England team 2-1, on Wednesday (15.Jul.2026), in Atlanta, and guaranteed a place in the final of the tournament. After the final whistle, the players took a banner to the pitch with a message about the Falkland Islands, a territory disputed between Argentina and the United Kingdom.

The gesture can be analyzed by FIFA because it involves a message considered to be of a political nature. The federation regulations prohibit political, religious or personal manifestations on equipment, banners and other materials displayed during matches organized by the federation.

FIFA has not yet announced whether it will open disciplinary proceedings. The organization must wait for official match reports before deciding on possible measures.

FIFA has already punished similar cases

In 2014, FIFA fined the Argentine Football Association after players displayed a banner with the phrase “The Malvinas are Argentine” before a friendly against the Slovenia national team, held in Buenos Aires.

At the time, the organization considered that the gesture violated the rules on political demonstrations and team conduct. The fine imposed was 30 thousand Swiss francs.

Other cases also involved FIFA restrictions on messages in competitions. At the 2022 World Cup, the federation vetoed the Belgium team’s second shirt because of the word “Love” (“Amor”)which appeared on the inside of the collar next to a colored stripe.

The uniform had been inspired by the Belgian festival Tomorrowland and, according to the country’s federation, represented diversity, equality and inclusion. The team had to withdraw its registration to use the shirt at the World Cup.

In 2026, the Haiti national team changed its uniform following a request from FIFA. The federation considered that the design contained “political messages”. The shirt referred to the Battle of Vertières, an 1803 confrontation associated with the country’s independence.

UK calls for investigation

The UK government has asked FIFA to investigate the case. The British Secretary for Business and Commerce, Peter Kyle, classified the gesture as “totally inappropriate”.

“I hope FIFA conducts its investigation rigorously,” he stated.

To the vice-president of Argentina, Victoria Villarruel (Democratic Party of Buenos Aires, direita)also commented on the episode on social media. She published a message accompanied by a video that made reference to Argentine soldiers and wrote: “The Falklands are Argentine”.

Before the match, Argentina national team coach Lionel Scaloni stated that he did not intend to mix football and politics.

“The reality is that this is a football game. I can’t mix things up, especially out of respect for what happened so many years ago,” these.

Dispute over the Falklands

The Falkland Islands, called the Falklands by the United Kingdom, are a British overseas territory in the South Atlantic and the target of a sovereignty dispute between the 2 countries.

In 1982, Argentina militarily occupied the archipelago, starting the Falklands War. The conflict lasted 74 days and ended in British victory. The war left 649 Argentine, 255 British and 3 civilian soldiers dead.
