A Ukrainian drone attack hit the data center of the Russian company Yandex, in the Kaluga region, this Friday morning (9). This was the second attack by the Ukrainian Armed Forces against the Russian company’s data centers in two days.

An attack on the company had already been recorded on Thursday night (8), in the Ryazan region. The attacks caused temporary interruptions to several services of the Russian technology conglomerate.

According to the Yandex press office, cited by the Russian newspaper Knowledgeseveral modules were deactivated, with part of the data center infrastructure damaged. As a result, the advisor reported that some of the company’s services may be experiencing instability. The full extent of the damage is being assessed.

The governor of the Kaluga region, Vladislav Shapsha, also reported that air defense forces destroyed 26 drones overnight over the districts of Maloyaroslavets, Peremyshl and Ferzikovo, and the city of Kaluga. The attack targeted the city’s infrastructure.

“Unfortunately, nine people were injured, five of whom were hospitalized and are currently in stable condition,” he wrote on Telegram. Private homes in two municipal districts were also damaged.

In a statement released this Friday, Yandex reported that employees at both data centers attacked were unharmed and that emergency teams and company experts were working on site.

“We thank our employees — both those on site and those who continue working to restore services. We thank our partners for their patience and cooperation, and our users for their understanding,” the statement reads.

Yandex is one of Russia’s largest technology companies, often compared to Google for bringing together internet search, maps, navigation, app-based transport, e-commerce and cloud computing services. The company also operates a wide network of data centers, responsible for storing and processing information necessary for the operation of its digital services.

Response in kind

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Thursday that Ukraine would respond in kind to Russian attacks, including attacks on Ukrainian data centers.

“They attacked and continue to attack our data centers. We responded,” he said, adding that he could not disclose all the details.

The Parkovy data center in Kiev reported on September 29 that its facilities had suffered critical damage following repeated Russian attacks and that its operations had been disrupted. According to the company, restoring services at that location was impossible at that time, and customer data was stored in backups in the European Union.
