Russian President Vladimir Putin has declared his support for a trilateral meeting with US and Chinese leaders Donald Trump and Xi Jinping. However, Putin stated that an agenda is needed for the meeting to take place. The speech was given during the plenary session of the Valdai Discussion Club this Thursday (1st).
“I have a good, long-standing relationship with President Trump. I am grateful to him for his efforts to resolve, for example, the Ukrainian crisis. As I have said many times, I am convinced that he is genuinely doing so,” the president said.
According to the Russian president, however, Russia’s relations with the United States are still hampered by old factors. “They have been developing over the past few decades. We would very much like these divisive factors to become a thing of the past and for new prospects for mutually beneficial cooperation to emerge,” he added.
Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov had previously reported that Putin and Trump discussed the possibility of a trilateral summit between Russia, the US and China on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) leaders’ meeting. On September 27, he allowed a meeting between the leaders, but did not specify whether it would be trilateral. On September 29, the Chinese side declared that it still had no information about such a meeting.
The Apec summit will be held on November 18 and 19, 2026, in Shenzhen. Putin and Xi Jinping have already agreed to a bilateral meeting. On September 29, presidential advisor Yuri Ushakov stated that preparations for a summit meeting between Putin and Trump had not yet begun.
New world order
Russian President Vladimir Putin took advantage of his participation in the Valdai Club to comment on the scenario of transformation of the international order. He asserted that sooner or later not only East and West, but also North and South, will have to agree on the foundations of a new world order.
“The intellectual wealth and experience of direct and trusting relationships accumulated by the Valdai Club will certainly be needed. Then, all of us — East and West, North and South — will have to agree on the principles to shape a new world order capable of ensuring the progress and development of humanity in the coming decades,” he said at the plenary session of the Valdai International Debating Club.
At the same time, he noted that “today, unfortunately, we face other challenges, much more complex and urgent.”
“The alarming trends we are observing on the international stage force us to consider not only how to organize global cooperation more wisely, effectively and fairly in the coming period, although this is undoubtedly extremely important, but, above all, how to preserve global peace and security now, when many previous legal norms have been discarded and new ones have not yet emerged,” Putin noted.
Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that the world faces numerous risks on the path to multipolarity and that minimizing them is the main objective.
“The global situation will gradually change for the better, towards a more stable, democratic and free multipolar international order. However, it is also clear that various risks await us on the path to such a world order… Therefore, minimizing risks at all levels, from global to personal, is the main task today,” Putin added.
