The Mexican government opened a federal investigation this Tuesday (29) into the actions of two North American citizens, identified as CIA agents, in an anti-drug operation carried out without authorization in the state of Chihuahua.
The agents died after being involved in an accident that also left two Mexicans dead.
The Attorney General’s Office (FGR) reported that it decided to centralize two investigations related to the case, given the “relevance and characteristics” of the episode. One of them deals with the presence of foreigners in operational activities in the country and considers the possibility of crimes linked to national security.
According to the agency, the investigation was forwarded to the Special Prosecutor’s Office for the Investigation and Litigation of Complex Cases, linked to the federal structure, which will be responsible for handling the case.
The second investigation was opened based on information released by state authorities about the accident involving a convoy of military personnel and agents. The vehicle in which the four occupants were traveling left the road, fell into a cliff and exploded. Among the dead were the two US citizens, the head of the state Bureau of Investigation and a local judiciary official.
The FGR also reported that the measures carried out by Chihuahua authorities are being analyzed for possible incorporation into ongoing federal investigations.
The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, stated that security cooperation agreements do not authorize the direct action of foreign agents in Mexican territory without the consent of the federal government.
According to the representative, the United States responded to the diplomatic note sent by Mexico after the episode. “They are providing the information, and in the response note they say they want to respect the Law and Constitution of Mexico,” he declared.
According to current legislation, the participation of foreign citizens in anti-drug operations in the state of Chihuahua is prohibited.
The episode occurs amid pressure from the United States government for greater direct involvement in the fight against drug trafficking in the region, an issue that has generated tensions with the Mexican government, which reaffirms the need to respect its sovereignty.
