The Peruvian left-wing candidate Roberto Sánchez (Together for Peru) surpassed the far-right candidate Keiko Fujimori this Monday (8) in the official count of the second presidential round, according to data released by the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE).
With 95.685% of the minutes counted this Tuesday morning (9), Sánchez appeared with 50.074% of the votes against 49.926%, in a dispute still marked by a narrow margin and a delay in concluding the official result.
Sánchez tallied 8,901,069 votes against Keiko’s 8,874,597, a difference of just 26,472 votes.
The delay in completing the investigation also increases expectations about possible legal challenges and political disputes after the final result is announced.
Peru’s recent history, marked by strong polarization and successive institutional crises, increases the tension surrounding the electoral outcome.
“I make a categorical call to all political agents to respect the result, whatever it may be, because Peru needs stability,” he stated.
More than 27.3 million Peruvians were called to vote in the second presidential round. According to ONPE, 90,223 voting tables were installed across the country.
International observation missions and electoral bodies reported that the process took place without serious incidents during the election day.
Still, the minimal difference between the two candidates keeps the country in a climate of political uncertainty as the official count approaches the final stretch.
