Thousands of Iranians formed human chains around power plants and strategic bridges this Tuesday (7). The mobilization responds to the ultimatum from US President Donald Trump, who threatened to carry out war crime air strikes against the country’s civilian infrastructure if the Iranian government does not reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
The movement was called by Alireza Rahimi, deputy minister of Youth and Sports, under the slogan “Iranian Youth Human Chain for a Bright Tomorrow”. According to local agencies Fars, IRNA and Mehr, the acts occurred simultaneously at 2 pm (local time) in several regions. The concentrations occurred in strategic locations, such as the Kazeroon thermoelectric plant, in Fars, and the vicinity of the Bushehr nuclear plant. In Khuzestan, protesters occupied the White Bridge and the Ramin plant in Ahvaz, with mobilizations also recorded in the cities of Tabriz, Dezful and Qazvin.
Protesters used posters classifying attacks on civilian targets as war crimes and defending national heritage. While the US government maintains the rhetoric of “devastating attacks”, Tehran uses popular mobilization as a demonstration of resistance and internal unity against external pressure.
