Solidarity with the Cuban people took singer Chico Buarque back to the Caribbean country. Since last Tuesday (7), he has been in Havana for a visit marked by the donation of medicines and a meeting with his friend Silvio Rodríguez, to record a song.

Chico returns to Cuba after 34 years. At the time, he was part of a solidarity brigade alongside names like Frei Betto and Ziraldo at a time when the island was also suffering from harassment by the United States following the dissolution of the Soviet Union.

The invitation to visit was made by Rodríguez, legendary singer and composer, and occurred at a time when US imperialism is advancing blockade measures in the country to intensify an economic and energy crisis.

On Wednesday (8), the artists were in a studio to record a version of ‘Sueño con Serpientes’, a song by the Cuban singer from 1975.

The Brazilian’s connection with Cuba is long-standing. In addition to maintaining his friendship with Rodríguez for five decades, one of the most listened to songs in Chico Buarque’s repertoire is a version of ‘Yolanda’, one of the greatest Cuban classics, composed in 1970 by Pablo Milanes, a celebrated musician who, like Rodríguez, is an exponent of the revolutionary song represented by the so-called Nova Trova. At the Museum of the Revolution in Havana, there is a photo of a performance by Chico and Milanes.

It is highlighted in a note published on Chico Buarque’s social networks: “The visit reinforces the ties between two central names in Latin American music, historically linked by aesthetic affinities and political engagement on the continent. Alongside his wife, jurist Carol Proner, Chico also donated essential medicines to the Cuban Ministry of Health.”

Defense of the Cuban people

The tightening to strangle Cuba promoted by Donald Trump is an affront to human rights. There was an increase in the blockade of fuel on the island by the USA, especially after the kidnapping of Nicolás Maduro, which affects patients in hospitals, the functioning of schools and the daily lives of the population.

Since the beginning of the year, Cuba has had the support of the international community by sending humanitarian aid, including fuel, medicine and food.

In March, the ‘Our America Caravan to Cuba’ brought aid to the country and witnessed the criminal blockade and revolutionary resistance. PCdoB was part of the delegation.

In these months of deepening economic blockade, Silvio Rodríguez set an example that the Cuban soul does not bow under attack. He, who in addition to being a musician is a former deputy of the National Assembly of People’s Power, claimed a rifle for himself to defend the country in the event of an enemy invasion.

The Cuban government responded to the request and provided the artist with a national symbol, a replica of the AKM rifle and another combat rifle. The act represented the patriotic disposition and the will to fight for freedom rooted in every Cuban, represented there by Rodríguez.
