Iran announced, last Wednesday (1st), the creation of a communication channel with the United States to address violations of the memorandum of understanding signed between the two countries. According to Iranian Vice Chancellor Kazem Gharibabadi, the mechanism will serve to formally record any non-compliance by Washington.
The decision was taken within the framework of technical meetings held in Doha, Qatar, this week. The trilateral talks were attended by representatives from Qatar and Pakistan, as well as Iranian authorities.
“The Iranian delegation raised and examined violations by the United States of its commitments under clause 1 of the memorandum of understanding regarding the cessation of the war in Lebanon, reports on United States efforts to reinforce equipment and forces in the region, and some threatening and interventionist statements by US officials,” Gharibabadi explained.
On the 17th, Iran and the USA signed the document to end the conflict that broke out at the end of February. Under the agreement, the countries committed to reaching a final agreement within 60 days, while seeking to ease restrictions on access to the Strait of Hormuz.
Understanding, however, is still fragile. Israel, one of the key actors in strategic security in the Middle East, has already expressed dissatisfaction with the situation. Shortly after the agreement was announced, Israeli troops continued attacking Lebanon.
Iran maintains that the terms of the deal must be considered in full. In practice, Tehran defends the unlocking of Iranian funds frozen abroad and demands that the United States pay US$300 billion to rebuild the Iranian structure, damaged by American and Israeli attacks.
In Qatar, Gharibabadi met with officials from the country’s Central Bank. “Some issues related to the allocation of part of the initial US$6 billion (R$31 billion) were examined, and it was decided that, in accordance with the needs announced by our country, the purchase of the necessary goods would be carried out and made available to Iran,” said the diplomatic official.
Despite the advance, Iran and the United States have not yet spoken directly. The American delegation, formed by Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, was in Doha this week, but only held talks with senior Qatari officials.
