Forest fires in the south of France, near the tourist region of Bordeaux, and in Madrid and Valencia, Spain, forced 325,000 people to leave their homes in these regions. In addition to the strong heat wave that hits this region of Europe, the fire spread easily, because the soil and vegetation have been dry for several months.
The city of Bordeaux, with around 270 thousand inhabitants, dawned with orange skies this Sunday (26). According to Mayor Thomas Cazenave, the fire is “15 kilometers from the city”. One of the main concerns is the current wind speed, which makes the action of 2,500 firefighters more difficult to plan and execute.
The situation led to the closure of an important highway and the partial interruption of train service. One of the most affected regions is Le Porge, where hundreds of houses and cars appear burned in images recorded by the AFP.
French firefighters have also been fighting other fires for days in the regions of Landes (southwest), Var (southeast) and the tourist island of Corsica.
In Spain, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez warned that “complex hours” lie ahead. Fires in the region of Madrid, the country’s capital, and neighboring provinces forced the evacuation of around 60,000 people.
Another heavily affected region is Valencia. A new fire in the province of Castellón forced the evacuation of at least 15 thousand people.
