Hurricane Melissa left 800,000 homeless in Cuba in October 2025

The European Union announced the allocation of 2.85 million euros to reinforce humanitarian aid actions in Cuba, with a focus on combating food insecurity.

The amount aims to help populations that are still suffering the severe impacts of Hurricane Melissa, which caused “considerable damage” in Cuba at the end of October 2025, seriously affecting infrastructure, especially in Santiago de Cuba, with winds of up to 200 km/h.

The financial resource will be managed to guarantee the distribution of essential food and strengthen storage and transportation capacities for supplies to the most affected provinces. According to the official statement, the priority for assistance is to serve around 815,000 people in vulnerable situations, ensuring that support reaches areas where local agricultural production was decimated by the storm quickly.

The European Union Commissioner for Crisis Management, Hadja Lahbib, highlighted the bloc’s commitment to stability in the region. “The EU remains at the side of the Cuban people in their time of need. After Hurricane Melissa, we were present and today we reinforced our mobilization with humanitarian aid to provide food and drinking water to those most in need”, said the commissioner.

In addition to direct assistance, the European fund must also include improvements in distribution logistics, aiming to minimize the social effects of the climate tragedy. Hurricane Melissa, which crossed the Caribbean with Category 5 winds, left a trail of destruction that worsened the supply crisis already faced by the island, making international cooperation a fundamental pillar for Cuba’s recovery.
