Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez reacted to Donald Trump’s latest invasion threats. In a post on social media this Saturday (2), he stated that the president of the United States is increasing military tension against the island to a dangerous and unprecedented level.
For Díaz-Canel, the international community must take note and, together with the people of the United States, “determine whether to allow such a drastic criminal act to satisfy the interests of a small, but rich and influential group, with an urge for revenge and domination.”
To top it off, the Cuban leader said that “no aggressor, no matter how powerful, will find surrender in Cuba. They will find a people determined to defend sovereignty and independence in every inch of the national territory.”
Trump’s threats and blockade
Díaz-Canel’s speech comes after Donald Trump stated, on May 1st, that he should invade the island as soon as his frustrated incursion into Iran ends. According to the North American, he will send an aircraft carrier, like the USS Abraham Lincoln, to operate close to the island’s coast.
Trump’s statements, made at an event in Florida, came after the expansion of sanctions against Cuba. The US government had announced that it would increase financial suffocation, including punishments for authorities, state-owned companies and even foreign companies that do business with the island. Furthermore, it reinforced the economic blockade, especially in the energy sector, aiming to restrict Cuba’s access to oil and the international financial system.

Washington’s measures coincided with the celebrations of Labor Day, widely spread in Cuba. As a result, the date included traditional acts, enhanced by the defense of national sovereignty in the face of the advance of the external offensive against the country. The mobilizations brought together thousands of people in protest in the capital Havana and other cities.

In a statement, the PCdoB expressed its rejection of Trump’s recent threats and statements, as well as the set of new coercive and genocidal measures announced by the White House. “We call on parties, parliamentarians, social movements and civil organizations to denounce and expand support and solidarity for Cuba in a permanent and vigilant manner. Defending Cuba means defending the people’s right to self-determination, sovereignty and the construction of their own destinies.” Check out the full note here.
