The BRICS 2025 summit, held in Rio de Janeiro between July 6 and 7, will seal commitments in three key areas: combating climate change, regulation of artificial intelligence and eradication of socially determined diseases. Decisions, discussed by sherpas (Negotiators of the 11 member countries), will be formalized in joint statements and reflect the Brazilian effort to include social issues on the international agenda.
“The Brazilian effort is to bring these themes to the center of the agenda of these large groups. In the presidency we have the possibility to do this. As we did in the G20, with the launch of the global alliance against hunger and poverty, and now we do the launch of the partnership for the elimination of diseases that we call the diseases of poverty – tuberculosis, leprosy, malaria, yellow fever,” coordinator of negotiations.
Climate and Health in Focus on the Brazilian Agenda
The climate schedule gains centrality in the proximity of COP30, which will be based in Belém in November. Global South Countries press the nations developed by financing energy transition. “They need to cooperate in financing the transition from countries that have not yet been fully developed,” said Lyrio.
In addition, the resolutions discussed include strengthening health systems and promoting food safety, with the aim of attacking the roots of inequality. Brazil seeks, with this summit, “rebalancing the international agenda, often centered on geopolitical disputes, to include priorities such as eradication of poverty, food safety and health systems strengthening,” said the organization’s official official.
Lula defends new global governance and warns of AI risks
During the opening of the Brics Business Forum this Saturday (5), President Lula (PT) reinforced the importance of the bloc. “During the resurgence of protectionism, it is up to emerging nations to defend the multilateral regime of commerce and reform international financial architecture. The BRICS follow as guarantor of a promising future.”
Lula also highlighted the role of the bloc nations in the green transition: “Our countries are already among the largest renewable energy investors on the planet. There is immense potential to expand the production of biofuels, batteries, solar plates and wind turbines.”
The president also warned about the dangers of technological concentration: “Artificial intelligence brings possibilities that we had not even imagined a few years ago. In the absence of collectively agreed clear guidelines, models generated only based on the experience of large technology companies will impose itself.”
Despite the absences of Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin – represented by his chancers and, in the case of Russia, for conferencing – Brazil leads a summit with a focus on concrete action. The Brazilian presidency of BRICS runs until the end of 2025.
