The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Vieira, spoke this Sunday (3) with the Iranian Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, about the developments of the war in the Middle East, amid the intensification of the United States military presence in the region.

According to Itamaraty, Araghchi presented Iranian diplomatic initiatives aimed at restoring peace, while the conflict continues without immediate prospects for an agreement, largely due to North American and Israeli actions.

The contact occurs amid a series of articulations conducted by Brazil with countries in the Middle East since the beginning of hostilities. In March, the minister spoke with the heads of Kuwaiti diplomacy, Jarrah Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah; from Jordan, Ayman Safadi; and from the United Arab Emirates, Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

The conversation takes place at a time of new escalation in the Strait of Hormuz, after United States President Donald Trump announced an operation to escort ships in the region, expanding the military presence in one of the main global trade routes.

At the same time, Iran said it was analyzing Washington’s response to a ceasefire proposal that includes the reopening of navigation in the strait and the withdrawal of US forces from areas around the country.

Reports released by Iranian state media also indicate that a US military vessel had been targeted by missiles after, according to Tehran, it failed to respect navigation rules – a version denied by US authorities -, highlighting the level of tension in the region.
