Attacks to Iran’s nuclear facilities
The Brazilian government expresses serious concern with military escalation in the Middle East and vehemently condemns, in this context, military attacks from Israel and, more recently, from the United States, against nuclear facilities, in violation of the sovereignty of Iran and international law. Any attack armed with nuclear facilities represents blatant transgression of the United Nations Letter and Standards of the International Atomic Energy Agency. Armed actions against nuclear facilities represent a serious threat to the life and health of civilian populations, exposing them to the risk of radioactive contamination and large-scale environmental disasters.
The Brazilian government reiterates its historical position in favor of the exclusive use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes and firmly rejects any form of nuclear proliferation, especially in regions marked by geopolitical instability, such as the Middle East.
Brazil also repudiates reciprocal attacks against densely populated areas, which have caused increasing number of victims and damage to civil infrastructure, including hospital facilities, which are specially protected by international humanitarian law.
In reiterating its exhortation to the exercise of maximum containment by all parties involved in the conflict, Brazil emphasizes the urgent need for diplomatic solution that interrupts this cycle of violence and opens an opportunity for peace negotiations. The negative consequences of the current military escalation can generate irreversible damage to peace and stability in the region and world and the regime of non -proliferation and nuclear disarmament.
