The new attack by the United States government against the Brazilian Judiciary, with a possible contribution of US$ 1 million for campaigns against the Federal Supreme Court (STF), adds to many other movements of interference by Donald Trump in the country, including interference in the electoral process itself. The US strategy, however, is not new and is part of a way in which imperialism operates in a region that the US has always considered its zone of influence: Latin America.
To the BdF Connectionyes Radio Brasil de Fatolawyer Olavo Hamilton, professor at the State University of Rio Grande do Norte (UERN), highlights that the USA has always had this relationship of interference in Brazil itself. He recalls how the US government helped, including financially, the installation of a military dictatorship in the country. The relevant change is only in the exposure of intentions.
“Imagining that they would have no influence on our politics, on the Federal Supreme Court, on the direction of the country is something naive”, he points out. “What changes is that Trump has a policy of disclosing what he is doing, of no longer hiding, of no longer hiding US interests. This happened now in the Venezuela episode, when Trump declared that, when kidnapping Maduro, the interest was in oil”, he argues.
Tension in the Judiciary
The attempt at external interference in the Supreme Court comes shortly after the selective leaks of the Banco Master investigation, which directly implicated STF ministers, such as André Mendonça, Alexandre de Moraes, Luiz Fux, Dias Toffoli and the current president of the Electoral Court, Kassio Nunes Marques.
For Olavo Hamilton, several recent decisions have generated instability in the STF and even legal uncertainty. An example is the case of censorship of the post about Our Lady of Aparecida; which Flávio Bolsonaro’s campaign felt affected by, as he mentioned “a militia family”.
“It’s something strange that it was banned. How do we link this to a specific candidate for the presidency of the Republic? How does this candidate come to the Judiciary to say: ‘They’re talking about me’? It’s almost ironic”, he assesses.
Hamilton assesses that the fact that Nunes Marques — a minister who is directly involved with banker Daniel Vorcaro, according to the Federal Police — presides over the Electoral Court is another element of the crisis. He assesses that none of the ministers with any suspicion of involvement in the case could judge.
“It’s very sad that you have this hint of suspicion. And then I would like to emphasize once again: this suspicion is based on leaks that are selective, that we do not know the context and integrity of this evidence, these supposed signs”, he points out.
Finally, the lawyer considers that the current moment of institutional crisis in the STF, which presents deep cracks, will continue for some time. “This division will not end anytime soon. If Lula wins, it will deepen and if Flávio Bolsonaro wins, they will try to end this division, impeaching a minister of the Federal Supreme Court”, he warns.
