Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov declared this Wednesday (23) that high-level negotiations to resolve the conflict in Ukraine will be useless without prior expert work. According to him, reestablishing talks between presidents, without prior diplomatic work, would be “a waste of time”.
According to him, negotiations to resolve the conflict in Ukraine have not yet reached a peaceful conclusion, but Moscow remains open to dialogue.
At the same time, a Kremlin spokesman stated that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is well aware of the decisions needed to resolve the Ukrainian crisis. He did not specify which decisions he was referring to.
Earlier, the first deputy chairman of the State Duma Committee on Foreign Affairs, Alexei Chepa, stated that negotiations between Moscow and Kiev, with the participation of Washington, to resolve the Ukrainian conflict could begin this year. He explained that, to achieve this, the White House needs to overcome Europe’s desire to interrupt dialogue.
Last Tuesday (22), US President Donald Trump met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly and stated that Moscow and Kiev could soon reach a peace agreement. He did not rule out a second meeting with Vladimir Putin to reach a Russian-Ukrainian peace agreement.
Commenting on the possibility of a trilateral meeting between the presidents of the USA, Russia and Ukraine, the Kremlin spokesman stated that Russia remains willing to negotiate peace over Ukraine, but the Kremlin does not yet see the necessary conditions to move forward in this direction. Peskov linked this assessment, in part, to the growing militarization of Ukraine and Kiev’s actions.
“Currently, there are no preconditions for the negotiations to reach a peaceful conclusion. However, we, as Russia, remain open to peace talks,” Peskov told journalists.
After the meeting with Trump last Tuesday, Zelensky declared Kiev’s willingness to hold negotiations in a trilateral format to discuss its details with the Russian side. At the same time, French President Emmanuel Macron announced plans to transfer radars and interceptor missiles to Ukraine.
According to the spokesman for the Russian presidency, the militarization of Ukraine and the continued supply of weapons from Europe to Kiev are factors that hinder the prospects of achieving an “energy truce”, proposed by US President Donald Trump.
“The militarization of Ukraine continues, in fact. European countries are increasingly seeking resources to purchase weapons. The Kiev regime continues its activities, which amount to terrorism,” Peskov told journalists on Wednesday, commenting on the call by US and Ukrainian presidents Trump and Zelensky for an energy truce.
