US Secretary of State Marco Rubio reported this Wednesday (23) that Russian President Vladimir Putin has been invited to the G20 summit, which will take place on December 14 and 15 in Miami.
“We believe that this will be an opportunity for him to dialogue not only with the president [Donald Trump]but also with world leaders. We hope the invitation is accepted,” Rubio told reporters.
According to him, the participation of Russian leader Vladimir Putin in the G20 in the current international context will be important for holding dialogues between leaders who also disagree with each other.
“If you only meet with people with whom you agree, then, of course, these meetings are very pleasant, but nothing happens in terms of solving problems. To solve problems, you have to meet with people with whom you disagree,” said the Secretary of State.
When asked about Moscow’s interest in accepting the idea of a ceasefire in the energy sector, Rubio stated that both Moscow and Kiev have expressed their willingness to adhere to the energy truce.
“I think both sides have expressed interest in some kind of limited ceasefire that covers grains and energy. It won’t resolve the war, but I think to some extent it could ease some of the global tensions we’re feeling right now,” he said.
The last and only time Putin met in person with Donald Trump since the start of the Ukraine war was on August 15, 2025, in Alaska, but this meeting did not produce concrete results.
The Kremlin has not yet commented on Rubio’s statement. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also did not respond to the American Secretary of State’s statements.
The meeting between Rubio and Lavrov took place behind closed doors and, according to Russian state news agencies, lasted more than 50 minutes. Sergey Lavrov has not yet commented on the outcome of the meeting.
The last meeting between Lavrov and Rubio took place on July 23, on the sidelines of the ASEAN events in Manila, and lasted just over 30 minutes. This is the fifth meeting between the Russian Foreign Minister and the US Secretary of State since 2025.
