Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Aragchi, declared this Saturday (19) that the security and stability of the Middle East must be established exclusively by the countries of the region, without the interference or presence of foreign powers.
“In the Middle East, sustainable security cannot be dictated from outside the region. Regional security must belong to the region itself. Countries in the region must be able to discuss their security, stability, development and common future and find their own solutions without the intervention of foreign powers”, said the chancellor.
During a speech at the Global Town Hall 2026 international forum, promoted by the Indonesian Foreign Policy Community (FPCI), the diplomat defended the transition from militarism to sustainable development and criticized the military interventions promoted by the United States and Israel in the region.
“What is happening in Gaza is not just a humanitarian tragedy, it is a test of the conscience and collective responsibility of the international community. The massacre of civilians, forced displacement, collective punishment and the destruction of vital infrastructure have also extended to Lebanon”, he pointed out.
When assessing conflicts in the Middle East, Aragchi stated that decades of external pressure have demonstrated that military force does not produce stability or lasting peace. According to the chancellor, the use of force has become a permanent mechanism to redefine the regional political scenario, citing the situation in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon as examples of the collapse of the current model.
“Under such circumstances, aggression becomes normalized, escalation becomes institutionalized, and destruction ceases to be a consequence of war and becomes an instrument to advance political goals,” Aragchi said.
The diplomat also classified the attacks carried out by the USA and Israel against Iranian territory as an “illegal, unfair, aggressive and unprovoked war”, part of a campaign of violations of national sovereignty without punishment.
The head of Iranian diplomacy highlighted that the country’s vision is not just theoretical, but the result of a costly historical experience for the population. Aragchi pointed out that building lasting stability requires dialogue, trust and mutual respect, rejecting the imposition of wills through military power.
He added that disregard for international law due to geopolitical interests compromises the legitimacy of multilateral institutions, such as the United Nations (UN).
“If international law is disregarded whenever the interests of the great powers dictate, we can no longer talk about the Rule of Law. If international institutions, including the UN, cannot oppose aggression and hold violators accountable, it is natural that the credibility of these institutions will be shaken”, said the diplomat.
For Aragchi, “what the world needs is a new paradigm in which development is considered part of security, the sovereignty of countries is respected, international law is applied equally and without discrimination to everyone and no geopolitical interest has priority over human lives”.
