More than 23,000 people remain in temporary shelters, according to a government report released on Wednesday (July 22)
The number of deaths from the earthquakes that hit Venezuela on June 24 rose to 5,398, according to a report released on Wednesday (22.Jul.2026) by the president of the country’s Legislative Assembly, Jorge Rodríguez (PSUV, left). The Venezuelan government also counts 16,740 injured.
At least 23,335 people remain in 107 temporary shelters for almost a month after the disaster. The return to homes is carried out gradually because part of the affected areas remains closed for safety inspections.
To define which properties can be reoccupied, the government adopted a classification system that indicates buildings released for use, those that need repairs and those that still require technical evaluation.
According to authorities, some buildings received authorization only to carry out minor works, such as repairing cracks and plastering. Properties with more serious structural damage remain closed while they undergo inspections. The official balance counts 856 affected buildings in total, of which 190 collapsed.
