Incident in Chongqing buried residential buildings and triggered government emergency response

Eight people died and another 34 were missing after a landslide triggered by rain hit an area on the banks of the Wujiang River, in Chongqing, southwest China. Ten people were rescued alive, and search operations are ongoing.

The landslide was recorded on Friday (18.Jul.2026) at 9:08 am in Hanjia subdistrict, Miao and Tujia Autonomous County of Pengshui. More than 10 residential buildings were buried, and some residents were trapped.

The Chinese government has activated level 2 of national emergency response for geological disasters, according to the Ministry of Emergency Management. A representative from the ministry led a team sent to the scene to coordinate rescue operations.

China Anneng Construction Group, a state-owned engineering and rescue group, has mobilized 110 specialized professionals, including engineering and geological technicians, as well as 50 sets of detection and search equipment to support work in Pengshui.

The Chongqing Fire Department also responded to the area. The corporation deployed more than 400 rescuers from 8 fire fighting units, accompanied by communications and medical support teams.
