Donald Trump’s government demanded that Brazil bar Chinese investments in the mining and rare earths sectors, in addition to fully opening the national market to American products, according to a document released by the ICL News. The release of the information comes two days after Trump announced a 25% tax on Brazilian products.

For international analyst Amanda Harumy, the decision exposes the Trump administration’s foreign policy, which places Latin America as a field of dispute. “Trump tries to isolate Latin America from the influences of a multipolar world, mainly China. Remembering that China is Brazil’s largest trading partner”, he highlights in an interview with BdF Connectionyes Radio Brasil de Fato. “It is a battlefield where two commercial powers meet: on one side the USA and on the other China.”

Harumy reinforces that Brazil has the capacity to maintain trade relations with several countries and, therefore, this “blackmail from the White House” once again shows its political nature. “They are trying to politically destabilize Brazil to influence the domestic dispute that we will have in October”, he states.

The analyst recognizes that some sectors will be impacted, but, at the end of the day, the attempt is political interference. “It’s an ideological-political discourse. Remembering that the Bolsonaro family at different times built this dialogue with Trump and defends the tariff on the Brazilian economy”, he argues.

Amanda Harumy assesses that the Lula government needs to be pragmatic in light of the latest events and, in her analysis, this is already happening. “Diplomatic channels have become instruments for building a dialogue. But it is not through diplomatic convincing that we will be able to resolve this great interest in political interference that the USA has been promoting in Brazil. And I emphasize: this will be the first interference of many”, he highlights.
