After almost two decades, the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas announced this Monday (06) the dissolution of its governing body in the Gaza Strip, a measure that paves the way for the entry of a technocratic committee aimed at implementing civilian government in the region.

The head of the Hamas press office, Ismail al-Thawabta, confirmed to AFP that “the head of the government’s emergency committee, Mohammed al-Farra, has officially submitted his resignation.” “He also decided to dissolve the committee to facilitate the administrative and governmental transition to the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza (NCAG),” he added.

The NCAG, an entity made up of Palestinian technocrats responsible for overseeing a future administration of the enclave, is part of one of the measures envisaged by the Peace Council, an initiative founded last October by the president of the United States, Donald Trump, which aims to supposedly broker a ceasefire between Hamas and the Zionist regime in Israel.

“Hamas has taken a new step by no longer being in charge of the Gaza Strip to remove any chances that the occupation (Israel) will invent pretexts that continue its aggression and war of extermination,” Hamas spokesman Hazem Qassem told AFP. “We expect NCAG’s swift entry. Hamas affirms its willingness to transfer government responsibilities to the committee to ensure its success.”

According to the Qatari broadcaster Al Jazeerathis is a “significant political change” for the Palestinian group, which has administered the region since its fighters took control of the opposing Fatah movement in 2007. However, the measure does not mean that Hamas is giving up its political or military power in the enclave, just “moving away from direct civilian government in Gaza”.

Since a ceasefire came into effect in the Gaza Strip in October 2025, the Palestinian movement has repeatedly stated its willingness to step away from governance as a way of putting an end to the genocide promoted by Israel. However, despite the recent measure, Hamas continues to refuse to comply with disarmament, one of the Zionist regime’s demands in the agreement.

In turn, the head of the Palestinian technocratic committee, Ali Shaath, welcomed Hamas’ announcement, highlighting that it is “fully prepared” to assume its responsibilities “as soon as the necessary resources and capabilities are available”.

According to the newspaper Times of IsraelLast week, NCAG announced that its members held a series of “highly productive” meetings in Cyprus to prepare the next phase of its efforts to alleviate the suffering of Palestinians.
