US President commented on collapse of negotiations; Mark Carney declared that countries are in a “trade war”

United States President Donald Trump stated on Truth Social that Canada wants “the benefits of being a State, without being one”after the failure of trade negotiations between the 2 countries. In response, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney declared that Canada and the US are in a “trade war”. The rupture led to the application of new North American tariffs of 50% on part of Canadian imports.

The new US tariffs affect about $20 billion in Canadian products, approximately 5% of the country’s imports. Items include wine, dairy products, cement, apparel and hockey equipment.

The measures are in addition to existing tariffs on Canadian steel, aluminum, automobiles and lumber. Trump said US farmers paid “massive amounts” in tariffs to Canada for years. Carney classified the new measures as a “bad review” intended for “hurt and divide” the country and said it will retaliate “reluctantly”.

Carney said in a speech to Parliament that Canada will retaliate “dollar for dollar” from September 8th, with surcharges on steel, dairy products, household appliances and electronics. “They asked for too much and offered too little”he stated in a speech in Parliament this Saturday (22.Aug.2026). “You are at war when you are attacked. We were attacked”he added.

The failure in negotiations also affects the review of the USMCA (United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement), which supports US$1.6 trillion in annual trilateral trade and replaced NAFTA in 2020. Canada and Mexico had requested to renew the agreement for another 16 years, but the US refused to maintain it under current terms. Asked about the impact of the impasse, Carney stated that the failure of negotiations is “certainly bad news”.
