A CNN survey conducted by the SSRS institute indicates that President Donald Trump faces a scenario of growing weariness among the electorate, with a sharp drop in approval among young people, Latinos and independent voters, according to a survey released this Monday (23).
The survey shows that only 32% of Americans believe that Trump has given priority to the country’s most important problems, while 68% say that the president has not focused on the central issues facing the population.
This is the worst result recorded by CNN in this indicator throughout Trump’s two terms.
The government’s overall assessment also remains at a low level. According to the survey, 61% of those interviewed say that the president’s policies are taking the country in the wrong direction, compared to 38% who see the path as correct.
Trump’s performance approval rating remains at 36%, with 63% disapproving.
Attrition is even more evident among strategic groups for the midterm elections. Among independent voters, approval fell to 26%, after a 15 percentage point drop last year — the lowest level recorded for Trump in that segment. Among Latinos, the drop was 19 points, while among people under 45 years old the drop reached 18 points.
Although Republicans and conservatives still have the highest levels of support for the president, even among these groups the numbers show weakening.
Approval among Republicans fell to 49%, below the 64% recorded after the address to Congress in 2025, marking the first time this term that the party’s support fell below the 50% mark.
The research also highlights generational differences within the Republican Party itself. While 63% of Republicans aged 65 and over strongly approve of Trump’s performance, that figure drops to 31% among Republicans under 35.
Young Republicans are also more critical of the government’s priorities and the direction of policies adopted.
When asked what they expected from the State of the Union speech, held this Tuesday (26), the majority of those interviewed pointed to the economy and the cost of living as central themes.
In total, 57% said they want to hear proposals on these issues, a percentage that reaches 65% among Republicans, 56% among independents and 50% among Democrats. Immigration, foreign policy, public security and health appear well behind.
Since last year, Trump’s approval rating has remained below 40%, reflecting persistent dissatisfaction with the government’s conduct in a context of high inflation, pressured cost of living and growing economic insecurity for broad sectors of the population.
