This Tuesday (13), Iran denounced the United States at the UN for inciting political instability in the country, in a letter sent to the Secretary-General of the United Nations and the Security Council after President Donald Trump called on the Iranian population to “continue protesting” and stated that “help is on the way”.

The statements are part of a series of public threats from Trump, who in recent days also defended the “takeover of institutions” in Iran and stated that the United States is evaluating “very strong options” against the country, including the possibility of military action.

In the letter, Iran’s ambassador to New York, Amir Saeid Iravani, stated that Trump’s statement “explicitly encourages political destabilization, incites and invites violence, and threatens the sovereignty, territorial integrity and national security of the Islamic Republic of Iran.”

The protests in Iran began at the end of December, amid deteriorating economic conditions, marked by high inflation, currency devaluation and a drop in the population’s purchasing power.

The economic crisis occurs under the impact of decades of unilateral sanctions imposed by the United States, which affect strategic sectors of the Iranian economy and restrict the country’s access to international trade, investment and financing.

Iran’s ambassador claims that Trump’s statements violate central principles of international law set out in the United Nations Charter.

According to Iravani, the US president’s speech constitutes “a flagrant violation of the fundamental principles of international law enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, in particular the prohibition of the threat or use of force under Article 2(4) and the principle of non-intervention in the internal affairs of States, under Article 2(7)”.

The document further argues that Trump’s call for the “takeover of institutions” should be understood as part of a broader strategy of regime change.

“The statement made explicitly today by the President of the United States, calling for the ‘takeover of institutions’, must be understood in the context of the failed 12-day war of aggression against the Islamic Republic of Iran in June 2025 and as an integral component of a broader policy of regime change,” the Iranian letter says.

The text adds that this policy includes “the escalation of illegal unilateral sanctions, deliberate social and economic destabilization, the systematic spread of insecurity and the incitement of young people to confront the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran”.

The government also urged the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, and the Security Council to adopt measures in the face of what it classifies as violations of the UN Charter.

For Tehran, it is up to the UN to “unequivocally condemn all forms of incitement to violence, threats to use force and interference in Iran’s internal affairs by the United States”.

The text further requests that the United Nations “urge the United States and the Israeli regime to immediately cease destabilizing policies and practices and to fully comply with their obligations under international law”, in addition to “warning the United States against any possible miscalculations that lead to acts of military aggression against the Islamic Republic of Iran”.
