Donald Trump’s proposal to take control of the Gaza Strip and forcibly displacing the Palestinians caused a wave of international convictions. Global leaders and human rights organizations have classified the plan as “racist, insane and criminal”, with the UN warning that the initiative can configure “ethnic cleaning.”
Among the hardest criticism is President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who rejected Trump’s idea and reaffirmed that “who has to take care of Gaza are Palestinians.”
The Brazilian denounced US hypocrisy by funding the war and then presenting themselves as mediators. Lula also stressed that what happened in Gaza is a genocide and criticized Washington’s attempt to rewrite the history of the conflict.
“The US participated in the incentive to everything Israel did in the Gaza Strip. So it makes no sense to meet with the president of Israel and say, ‘We will occupy Gaza, we will recover Gaza, let’s live in Gaza.’ And where do the Palestinians go where, where are they going to live? What are their country? ”Lula said in an interview with radios in Minas Gerais.
“What happened in Gaza was a genocide, and I honestly don’t know if the United States, which are part of it, would be the country to try to take care of Gaza,” he said.
United States President Donald Trump’s proposal to take control of the Gaza Strip and forcibly displace the Palestinian population generated a strong international reaction. The UN classified the plan as “ethnic cleaning,” while European governments and Arabs rejected any possibility of forced deportation.
The UN Secretary-General stated that the US initiative represents “a crime against humanity” and warned that the compulsory displacement of the Palestinian population would violate international law and aggravate instability in the Middle East.
Amnesty International reinforced the gravity of the proposal and warned of the risk of destroying Palestinian identity.
“Removing all Gaza Palestinians is equivalent to destroying them as people. Gaza is their home. Death and destruction in Gaza are the result of the Israeli government killing civilians to the thousands, often with US bombs, ”said Paul O’Brien, the executive director of Amnesty in the United States.
In Europe, the main governments also condemned the proposal. France stated that any forced displacement of the Palestinian population would violate international law and represent an obstacle to the solution of two states. Spain stressed that “Gaza is the land of Palestinians and should be part of the future Palestinian state.” The Government of Ireland called the initiative as “a contradiction to the UN Security Council resolutions.”
Turkey also positioned itself against Trump’s proposal and warned that the idea of forced deportation is “inadmissible.”
“The question of deportation regarding Gaza is something that neither the region nor we would accept. Even thinking about this is a waste of time. It is wrong to even bring this to the discussion, ”said Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan.
Saudi Arabia rejected any normalization of relationships with Israel without the creation of a Palestinian state and warned of the negative impact of the proposal on regional stability.
“Saudi Arabia’s position on the Palestinian state is firm and unshakable. Any attempt to move the Palestinians from their land is unacceptable, ”said the Saudi Foreign Ministry.
Trump’s proposal was also rejected by the Palestinian Authority, which warned of a “new Nakba” and stated that “the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people are not negotiable.” Hamas has classified the idea as “racist and absurd” and stated that any attempt at forced displacement “would fire the region.”
The hardening of Trump’s rhetoric against Palestinians happens at the same time as he expands his alignment with Israel and resumes his “maximum pressure” policy against Iran and can cause catastrophic reactions in the region.
